Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered 3rd-level domains remained working.
